ACH (Automated Clearing House) lets your customers pay a Payment Link directly from a bank account instead of a credit or debit card. When your account supports ACH, the Payment Link presents a Bank Account (ACH) option alongside the standard Card option, and your customer chooses how to pay.
Is My Account Set Up for ACH?
If your account supports ACH, the merchant account appears as “(Cards & ACH)” in the account selector. If you do not see this label, ACH is not currently enabled on your account.
- SwipeSimple Web: Open the account selector at the top of the dashboard and look for the “(Cards & ACH)” label.
- SwipeSimple Mobile: Open the account menu and look for the “(Cards & ACH)” label.
| Note: If you're unsure whether your account supports ACH, contact your merchant service provider. The contact information for your Merchant Service Provider can be found in SwipeSimple. |
How to Create a Payment Link with ACH
When your merchant account supports ACH, every Payment Link you create from that account automatically offers both Card and Bank Account (ACH) to your customer. There is no separate ACH toggle on an individual link.
SwipeSimple Web:
- Go to Payment Links.
- Select New Payment Link.
- Choose a merchant account labeled “(Cards & ACH)”.
- Enter the payment details (amount or open amount, description, and required customer fields, including email).
- Save and share the link by copying the URL, downloading the QR code, or sending it by email or text.
What Your Customer Sees
When your customer opens the Payment Link, the payment form shows two tabs: Card (selected by default) and Bank Account (ACH).
When your customer selects Bank Account (ACH), the form requests:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Routing Number
- Account Number
- Account Type (defaults to Checking; Savings is also supported)
| Note: The form displays only the fields your account requires. If your account requires identity verification, your customer is also asked for a birth year or the last four digits of a Social Security number, along with a billing address. |
Before submitting, your customer must select the authorization checkbox agreeing to the bank debit. The Pay button displays the total amount and updates if the amount or tip changes.
Pricing and Adjustments
Automatic price adjustments apply to card payments only. ACH payments are always charged the base price.
| Adjustment Type | Applied to Cards? | Applied to ACH? |
| Surcharge | Yes | No |
| Cash Discount / Dual Pricing | Yes | No |
Convenience Fees
If a convenience fee applies to your account, it is added when your customer pays by ACH.
What your customers will see:
- A fee indicator on the Bank Account (ACH) tab.
- A banner describing the fee.
- The fee amount reflected on the Pay button.
- Fee disclosure within the authorization language.
The convenience fee appears as a separate charge on your customer's statement. If a customer asks about two charges, explain that one charge is the payment and the other is the convenience fee, collected separately.
| Important: Convenience fees are not refunded when a payment is voided or refunded. |
ACH Settlement Timing
| Important: ACH payments do not settle instantly. The transaction is marked as paid immediately, but the funds typically take a few business days to fully process. SwipeSimple checks the payment status nightly and updates the transaction if the payment ultimately fails. |
If an ACH payment fails your customer receives a decline email containing a Submit Payment Again link that returns them to the Payment Link to try again, and you receive a decline email with a View Transaction Details link.
Voids and Refunds
- Void -The Void button is available for up to 5 days after the payment. Use Void to cancel a payment before it finishes processing.
- Refund - The Refund button is always available. After 5 days, Refund is the only option.
- ACH refunds must be for the full amount; partial refunds are not supported. A refunded ACH transaction cannot be voided.
If you attempt a Void outside the 5-day window, you receive an error and can select Refund instead. The reverse also applies.
Returns
A return occurs when a payment is accepted and then reversed by the customer's bank, for example due to insufficient funds. Returned ACH payments are marked as Declined, and the transaction details show the return code and description.
Transaction Table & Filtering
In the transaction table, an ACH Payment Link payment shows Paid By: ACH and Method: Payment Link. The Last 4 column shows the last four digits of the bank account, and the customer's first and last name appear in the name column.
To filter for ACH payments:
- Open the transaction table.
- Apply the Paid By filter.
- Select ACH.
Transaction Details
For an ACH payment, the transaction details show the masked bank account number, masked routing number, bank name (when available), and account type. Card-specific fields do not appear.
On an ACH receipt, the masked bank account number replaces the card number, and card-specific sections are removed. The method still displays as Payment Link.
Reporting
ACH payments are included in the Total Net ACH column of the Sales Report.
