Why am I being prompted to add a phone number or website?

SwipeSimple may prompt you to add a phone number or a website to your account when you create an invoice, payment link, scheduled payment, or when you charge a saved card in the Virtual Terminal. This article explains why you are seeing this prompt, what the requirement is, and how to add your information.

Why am I seeing this prompt?

Mastercard now requires businesses to include contact information with their transactions. When your account is missing a valid phone number or website, SwipeSimple prompts you to add it so that your transactions continue to meet this requirement. You will typically see the prompt once, at the point where you start one of the actions listed above.

What is the requirement?

Mastercard has introduced a rule for acceptor contact data. The rule is designed to give cardholders a reliable way to reach a business when they have a question about a charge, which helps reduce confusion and disputes. In practice, the rule works as follows:

  • Card-on-file and online payments: Your business website is included with the transaction. Mastercard treats saved-card (card-on-file) payments as online payments, so a website applies to invoices, payment links, and saved-card charges.
  • All other payments: Either your business website or a customer service phone number is included with the transaction.

To make sure your transactions always carry valid contact information, we recommend adding both a phone number and a website to your account.

What do I need to do?

Add a valid phone number and website to your account. You can do this by navigating to Account Settings in your SwipeSimple Web dashboard. Please keep the following format rules in mind so that your information is accepted:

  • Phone number: Enter a 10-digit number using digits only.
  • Website: Enter a valid web address. It must contain a period, with at least one letter or number before the period and at least two letters after it. It cannot contain spaces or an “@” symbol. For example, www.yourbusiness.com
    • Keep in mind that this can be any website where a customer can contact you with questions, so that includes social media handles such as Instagram or Facebook pages as well.

How do I add or update my information?

You can add or update your phone number and website at any time in Account Settings:

What happens if I do not add this information?

You can continue to use SwipeSimple and process transactions. SwipeSimple will not block a transaction solely because a phone number or website is missing. However, we strongly recommend adding this information, because it keeps your transactions aligned with Mastercard’s requirement and helps your customers reach you when they have a question about a charge.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will my transaction be declined if I skip this?
    • No. SwipeSimple will not decline a transaction only because contact information is missing. The prompt is a reminder to help you stay compliant with Mastercard’s requirements.
  • Why am I being asked for this now?
    • This is a new Mastercard requirement for contact information on transactions. SwipeSimple added the prompt so that you can add any missing details quickly and keep your account up to date.
  • Do I need both a phone number and a website?
    • Card-on-file and online payments use your website, and other payments can use either your website or your phone number. Adding both is the most reliable way to make sure every transaction carries valid contact information.
  • Who can update this information?
    • Admin users can update the business phone number and website in Account Settings.
